The roof of a newly refurbished terminal building at New Delhi’s international airport partially collapsed early Friday morning due to heavy rains, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to eight others. The incident occurred at Terminal 1, a facility dedicated to domestic flights.
Images posted online show vehicles crushed under massive steel girders at the terminal’s departure forecourt. This terminal is one of several infrastructure projects that were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March, ahead of the general election.
In response to the incident, airport authorities have canceled all flights departing from Terminal 1 until early afternoon. A statement released online by the authorities said, “Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy… collapsed around 5 am. Emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.”
Rescue teams are currently on site, providing necessary assistance and medical aid to the injured. The focus is on ensuring the safety and well-being of all those impacted by the collapse.
