A school bus carrying children from Abaseen School in Swat’s Khwazakhela tehsil plunged into a ditch, resulting in the death of one child and injuries to 41 others. The accident occurred when the bus lost control while crossing a narrow bridge in the Asala area.
According to Shafiqa Gul, a spokesperson for Rescue 1122, the bus veered off the bridge, leading to the tragic incident. “One student died on the spot, while 41 others were injured, six of whom are in critical condition,” Gul reported. Rescue 1122 teams responded swiftly, transporting the injured to Khwazakhela Hospital. Those in critical condition were transferred to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the driver lost control of the bus, causing it to fall into the ditch. Local resident Haider Ali revealed a troubling history with the bus driver, who had previously been involved in a fatal accident in November 2021. That incident resulted in the deaths of four children and injuries to 30 others in Swat’s Matta tehsil.
Residents have expressed long-standing concerns about the narrow road and bridge in the Asala area, citing numerous accidents and urging authorities to take action. Despite repeated pleas, no measures have been implemented to widen the road. The community is now calling for accountability from both the driver and the school’s owner for compromising the safety of the children.
District Police Officer Swat, Dr. Zahidullah, confirmed that an immediate inquiry into the incident has been launched. He assured that strict action would be taken against the school’s management and the driver.
