UEFA is investigating England midfielder Jude Bellingham for a gesture made following his dramatic late equalizer against Slovakia in Sunday’s Euro 2024 last-16 tie. Bellingham was seen making a crotch-grabbing gesture towards the Slovakian bench after scoring an overhead kick in stoppage time.
The Real Madrid player denied that the gesture was aimed at Slovakia’s team, stating on social media that it was an inside joke directed at some close friends in attendance. Despite this explanation, UEFA is examining the incident for a potential violation of “the basic rules of decent conduct” as outlined in article 11/2b, which mandates respect for “principles of ethical conduct, loyalty, integrity, and sportsmanship.”
If found in breach, Bellingham could face suspension, a fine, or both. This investigation comes as England prepares for their quarter-final match against Switzerland on Saturday.
Responding to the incident, Bellingham wrote: “An inside-joke gesture towards some close friends who were at the game. Nothing but respect for how that Slovakia team played tonight.”
Similar incidents in the past, such as those involving Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego Simeone, resulted in fines but no suspensions, indicating potential outcomes for Bellingham.
