Munawar Hussain, 60, has been sentenced to an indefinite hospital order following his violent attack at a Marks & Spencer store in Burnley in December 2020. During the incident, Hussain stabbed store manager Samantha Worthington in the neck and pursued her through the aisles. He also attacked customer Janet Dell, stabbing her in the arm and attempting to stab her in the back, although the knife broke off in her handbag strap.
Hussain was apprehended by a store detective and members of the public as he attempted to flee the scene. Authorities later found a note written in Urdu on Hussain, indicating his belief that Marks & Spencer was financially supporting Israeli actions against Palestinians.
After being found guilty of attempted murder and wounding, Hussain also pleaded guilty to attempting to murder a nurse at the secure unit where he was held. The court issued an indefinite hospital order, meaning Hussain can only be released by the Secretary of State for Justice or the Mental Health Tribunal.
