The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for a suicide car bomb attack near Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan. The militant group stated that the SVBIED (Suicide Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device) attack was aimed at a convoy of Chinese investors and engineers, who were under the escort of the Pakistani army. The incident highlights ongoing security concerns regarding Chinese nationals involved in various infrastructure projects in Pakistan.
At least one person was killed, and 10 others, including a foreign national, were injured in the massive explosion. The blast was reportedly heard across different areas of Karachi, including Karimabad, Defence, and Jamshed Road. Footage aired on television showed thick clouds of smoke billowing and a blazing fire at the explosion site.
Malir Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) confirmed the occurrence of a significant explosion near the airport’s traffic signal. Preliminary reports suggested an oil tanker may have exploded, igniting several vehicles nearby. However, law enforcement agencies have launched an investigation to determine the exact nature of the blast.
Emergency response teams, including police and firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene. Rescue officials transported the injured to Jinnah Hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities confirmed that six individuals had been shifted to the hospital for further medical attention.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has demanded a detailed report from the Malir SSP regarding the explosion. He emphasised the need to ascertain the facts behind the incident and directed authorities to provide the best possible medical care to the injured. The Chief Minister also instructed that roads leading to and from the airport remain open to prevent disruption.
Home Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar stated that an investigation had been launched. He further noted that CCTV footage from the area was being collected to assist in determining the cause of the explosion and identifying any suspects involved.
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks targeting Chinese nationals and projects associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The BLA has previously launched similar attacks, citing opposition to Chinese involvement in Balochistan and broader regional infrastructure projects.
