Joker: Folie à Deux, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, saw an unprecedented 80% drop at the North American box office, falling from $40m during its debut to just $7.1m in its second weekend.
This dramatic decline marks a record-breaking collapse for a comic-book film, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film was overtaken by the indie horror movie Terrifier 3, which secured the top spot with $18.2m over the weekend.
The Wild Robot, an animated feature, claimed second place, holding steady with $13.4m. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice dropped to fourth, grossing $7m.
While Joker: Folie à Deux opened with strong numbers, its performance has sparked mixed reactions from critics, who have described it as both “bleak and daring” as well as “depressingly dull and plodding.”
