Two women were hospitalised on Thursday evening after a fairground ride in Birmingham city centre malfunctioned and “dropped to ground level” while in operation. The incident occurred at Centenary Square at 19:29 GMT, prompting a swift response from emergency services.
West Midlands Police confirmed reports of an issue with the City Flyer ride, a 55-metre-tall attraction described as “one of the tallest rides around.” Images from the scene showed tangled wires from at least two gondolas on the ride.
West Midlands Ambulance Service reported that the two women sustained injuries that were not considered serious and were taken to Midland Metropolitan University Hospital. An additional 11 people—nine women and three men—were assessed and discharged at the scene.
Witnesses described scenes of distress. One bystander reported seeing “girls who appeared to be injured” walking away from the area, including one individual with a visible facial injury.
The West Midlands Fire Service stated that the ride dropped unexpectedly while in operation. A police cordon was established between the ice rink, library, and Rep theatre, with authorities urging the public to avoid the area.
Witnesses at the scene expressed shock. Lilly Nitsch, 18, from Leamington Spa, said the incident made her feel “lucky” after reflecting on her own experiences on similar rides. Amelie Huet, 18, who was nearby at the time, recounted seeing ambulances, police cars, and fire engines while hearing accounts of the structure dropping and someone falling out.
The City Flyer ride is operated by Danter Attractions, known for providing high-profile funfair rides. Investigations into the cause of the malfunction are ongoing, with authorities working to ensure the safety of similar attractions.
