Tommy Robinson, the controversial British activist known for his far-right views and legal troubles, has been arrested in Canada on immigration violations. According to authorities, Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, entered the country under false pretenses by claiming he had no convictions, despite having a significant criminal record.
Robinson’s arrest occurred shortly after he gave a speech in Calgary, Alberta on Monday. A video posted online shows Robinson being handcuffed by two plain-clothed police officers. He was informed that he was the subject of “an outstanding immigration warrant” and was then led away.
Following his arrest, Robinson was released but had his passport seized. He took to his social media channels to share his experience, stating, “OK I’m free, well, sort of. None of this makes sense, I’m now detained in Calgary, prevented from leaving the city. These conditions stop me from continuing my tour of Canada and meeting with guests for podcasts. I’m not even allowed to leave to travel home.”
Robinson is expected to claim that he is a victim of political persecution. However, Canadian officials maintain that his arrest is strictly due to his failure to disclose his criminal history, which is a violation of Canadian immigration law.
This development adds another chapter to Robinson’s contentious history, which includes numerous legal battles and convictions in the UK. More details about his legal situation in Canada are expected to emerge in the coming days.
